Tip Tuesday: Seating Charts

The day is quickly approaching and your torn between open seating or assigned seating. As professional planners we have seen many successful events with both option but if you’re still deciding between the two let us help you narrow it down.

Open seating is best for you if:

  1. You are having cocktail style reception
  2. The reception area is separated in multiple spaces

Assigned seating is best for you if:

  1. You are having a buffet or plated meal
  2. There is a designated time for all guests to eat

When in doubt our recommendation is do assigned seating; either with a seating chart or designated seats. There are so many benefits to selecting a specific seat or table for your guests.

1. Logistics

By giving guests a designated place to sit, you are guaranteeing them a “home base” for the rest of the event. A place to set their belongings and always come back to. If they get called to the dance floor or migrate to another table, they know exactly where they last set down their drink, leading to less use of glassware.

2. Personalization

Table numbers and place cards allow you to personalize details tailored to your guests. They add a touch of style and make your guests feel welcomed. Many guests travel and resources to be there to celebrate your big day. This is a great way to acknowledge their presence and for them to know their attendance is appreciated.

3. Social Interaction

Have you ever been to a wedding where you didn’t know many people? Open seating can feel intimidating and overwhelming. Having assigned seats can take that discomfort away. Assigned seating allow you to place people with others they may not know but will connect with. This will keep people engaged and staying longer!

4. Maximizing Venue Space

Assigning seats allows for efficient use of space within the venue. You can plan seating arrangements to make the best use of the available tables and accommodate the number of guests attending. This will cut down on table and chair rental costs.
